Current Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg has claimed Fernando Alonso can only blame himself for the decisions that have prevented him from claiming a third world title.

It is now over a decade since the Spaniard claimed his second crown in 2006 with doomed spells at Ferrari and McLaren proving decisive despite coming close on three occasions in 2007, 2010 and 2012.

In the past, his decision-making has been questionable as it emerged Alonso declined an offer to join Red Bull just before they became competitive in 2009 and joined McLaren just before Ferrari started winning races again in 2015 and have gone on to be more competitive in 2017. 

Therefore when it was suggested to Rosberg by Spanish newspaper AS that "bad luck" was responsible for what many see as Fernando's under-achievement in F1, he replied: "It was not bad luck.

"It's not bad luck when you choose the wrong teams to be at because that's all part of being a top driver. You can be the best driver in the world, but you won't win in a bad car."

Now the 36-year-old is at a crossroads once again as he decides his future for 2018 following three years struggling in the midfield and even lower at times as the re-collaboration of a once-dominant partnership between McLaren and Honda fell way short of expectations.

That partnership has now been ended for next season, with the British team tieing up with Renault in an effort to boost competitiveness and Alonso is expected to continue with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.

“We are into the details now [of a new contract],” McLaren racing director Eric Boullier revealed. “As far as the intention is there and I think we should be able to fix the details. If we start to think of all the scenarios that would be complicated but so far we expect to be able to convince Fernando to stay.”
