Pierre Gasly's day might have ended in the barrier, but he is excited by the early potential of his Red Bull car.

As Max Verstappen kept the cockpit to himself throughout the shakedown and on Monday, the second day of action in Barcelona marked the first time the Frenchman had climbed into the RB15.

And much of the day had been productive right until he spun off at Turn 12 during the afternoon, just eight laps shy of the century mark.

“Basically you are pushing the car to the limit and playing with the limits,” Gasly told the media in the paddock. "I went on throttle and lost the rear, and basically, that was it.

“It caught me a bit by surprise and not much you can do once it is done. We have six more days of testing and a lot of stuff to test.”

The Toro Rosso graduate was quick to put the frustration behind him, however, as he focused on the positives.

“I was really excited to be back behind the wheel. We did some positive tests over the day," he explained.

“I felt very comfortable in the car. We feel there is some really good potential. We need to understand more our package but the first feedback is good.”

Naturally, there was the matter of how the Honda partnership is developing, with Gasly well acquainted with the Japanese manufacturer after last season.

“I think so far it has been really good,” he commented. “Also looking at Toro Rosso, they have managed to do a lot of laps [209 after two days] so we need to use all the feedback.

“But so far we are really happy with the job they [Honda] have done. Still more tests to do over the next six days but really happy so far.”
