Antonio Giovinazzi admits he will likely follow the lead set by Alfa Romeo teammate Kimi Raikkonen this year.

The Italian finally gets his first real chance in Formula 1 this season despite deputising for Pascal Wehrlein when it was Sauber at the start of 2017.

However, he faces a tough task up against the 2007 world champion, who continues to perform at his peak even at 39 years old.

“I think it will be just a mistake to do it a different way from him,” the former GP2 runner-up told Motorsport.com about his approach.

“Now my target is to work from him, just learn from him [and it's] the right thing as well to go in the same way and drive in Kimi’s way, [to] make it a lot easier also for the team.”

Giovinazzi made a solid start to pre-season on Tuesday, with the Alfa Romeo appearing a strong package in the midfield based on trackside observations.

But while he did gain initial experience two years ago stepping in for Wehrlein, he admits this time is very different.

“Finally I can work for me, for my car, and this is what I’m doing," he explained. “I’m trying to take all the feedback, give to the team and try to work a lot with the team and with Kimi as well to build a good car.

“I followed Kimi’s day [on Monday], we can do a really good job together.

“Kimi has a lot more experience than me, so I just need to listen to him and give my feedback.”
