Fernando Alonso says he would certainly seek a return to Formula 1 if the possibility of adding to his career achievements was possible.

The double world champion called time on his stay in F1 after 17 years at the end of 2018 but, on Wednesday, revealed he will test the McLaren car this year as part of a new ambassadorial role with the British team.

An inability to compete at the front was the main reason for his decision to leave, with Alonso taking on new challenges, including trying to follow Graham Hill as a winner of motorsport's triple crown.

"At the moment, as I said last year, I feel at the peak of my career, so probably being at home is a waste of time and possibilities for everyone," he said of taking on the role with McLaren.

"First for me, because I'm doing different, iconic races now, I feel in the best moment of my driving career, so I hope to win as many races as I can. But I [will] also stay involved in F1 life, just in case.

"I'm stronger than ever now at 37, [both] physically, mentally, and the background that you have in different categories and different driving styles.

"So I feel very good now, very competitive in any car that I jump in."

In May, Alonso will again team with McLaren to compete in the Indianapolis 500, the final piece of the triple crown which eludes the Spaniard, he will also continue in WEC with Toyota and won the Daytona 24 Hours last month.

"I will keep going for a couple of years and select what races can make an impact on my career and impact on everything," he continued.

One eye, however, will continue to remain on the F1 grid in the hope that the third title Fernando has craved may once again come into view.

"As I said if one day Formula 1 again arrives at the moment when I can be competitive, and I can eventually be winning, I cannot be relaxed at home at that moment," Alonso stated.

"I need to keep updated, and the best way is to be involved somehow."
