Sergio Perez has heaped praise on Formula 1 sporting director Ross Brawn and his team for their work with the 2019 aero changes.

The Mexican joined Daniel Ricciardo and Kevin Magnussen in declaring a positive impact from the new front and rear wing designs which it is hoped will be less sensitive to dirty air and allow for closer racing.

A noticeable difference in Perez's assessment, however, was it came as he ran behind a faster car as opposed to holding a significant pace advantage.

 “I did [follow] a bit with [Valtteri] Bottas and certainly it feels like you lose less downforce," he told Motorsport Week.

“So far I would say that Formula 1 has done an incredible job with the rules. We will see what it is like in Melbourne, racing with other cars around you with similar pace but I really hope the show can be better.

“I think the delta to overtake a car should be reduced by quite a bit given that you can follow more and the advantage from DRS," Perez added, "so I hope the racing can be a lot more fun for the fans and the drivers.”

While the simpler front wings have gotten more attention, the rear wing is also making a noticeable difference but Haas driver Romain Grosjean does wonder if it will make overtaking too easy.

“Definitely when you don’t use your DRS you feel like a sitting duck on the straight,” he told RaceFans.net.

“You’ve got a parachute on your back. So it will be interesting to see how into racing with it, and what’s happening. But the DRS effect is big now.”
