Ferrari still probing Vettel testing crash in case of underlying issue

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto has confirmed investigations continue into Sebastian Vettel's hefty crash during testing last week.

The four-time world champion would go off track into the barriers at Turn 3 with the Scuderia blaming a wheel rim failure caused by damage from a foreign object.

But, while the lack of any further issues over the eight days would seem to back up the notion of it being a freak incident, Ferrari is not taking any chances.

“We looked a look through all the data to try to understand the origin and the cause of the problem,” Binotto explained.

“I think it’s been a very unlucky situation.

“On our side, that [rim damage caused by a foreign object] is the best explanation we’ve got so far but we will still make sure and look deeper in all the details and data, eventually, to address any issue that may be still potentially there.”

The crash was the biggest moment of less than ideal second week for Ferrari as reliability issues had impacted their program before the headline-grabbing lap times over the final two days.

“Our programme has not run as we were hoping," Binotto accepted. “Can we be more prepared…I don’t think so. I think the fight will still be very high.

“I think we are not yet ready for Melbourne but there are still some days until we go there. Most of the tasks need to be done.”
