Sergio Perez believes there is some hope the Mexican Grand Prix will continue beyond 2019.
The event at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has lost its provisional date on the 2020 calendar after the country's president claimed funding for the Formula 1 race would be cut in a new austerity program.
However, talks between officials and Liberty Media continue and Perez, who will have some insight into the situation through his connections in Mexico, offered a more optimistic tone.
“It’s looking a bit more promising lately,” he told Motorsport Week.
“I really hope that for Formula 1, we don’t lose such a big venue, it’s been the best Grand Prix in the last four years and I hope we get to see the Grand Prix continue on the calendar.

“Also for my country, I think we need F1 because it’s great exposure, it really shows how great is Mexico as a country, so I’m optimistic so I’m more optimistic than I used to be.
“There are some talks, I obviously don’t have the full details and it’s not my job to really comment on that," the Racing Point driver noted.
"It’s just that things probably aren’t as bad as they were so there might be some hope.”
Mexico is one of five races that could fall off the schedule in 2020, with Grand Prix's in Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain all also out of contract after this season.
