Nico Hulkenberg has been targeted by Red Bull as a potential replacement for Pierre Gasly, it is claimed.
In the latest rumour to come from the weird and wonderful Monaco paddock, Motorsport.com's Italian branch claims advisor Helmut Marko made contact with the German in Monte Carlo.
Perhaps it is not surprising to think that the Milton Keynes-based outfit has started raising doubts as to whether Gasly has what it takes alongside Max Verstappen.
The Frenchman has now planted himself predominantly in sixth place every weekend, which is better than in the opening two races but it is leaving the Dutchman alone to fight the Ferraris and the odd Mercedes.
Motorsport Italy claim any interest in signing Hulkenberg would only see him join in 2020, thus giving Gasly a little more time to prove himself worthy of his Red Bull seat.
However, the apparent reasons for selecting Nico are more vengeful.
Marko is thought to have been impressed by his pace against Daniel Ricciardo at Renault since the Australian joined from Red Bull for this season.
It is also thought the Austrian wants a last dig at the French manufacturer, following the end of their increasing fractious partnership, by taking Hulkenberg.

While it's something Marko can just be imagined doing, it just doesn't seem in the Red Bull philosophy to bring in a veteran entering probably his final few years on the F1 grid.
Alex Albon has impressed at Toro Rosso and there are plenty of other younger drivers that perhaps could be attracted, particularly as next season will determine if Verstappen commits his future to the team.
