Verstappen brushes off Q2 exit in Canada: We were very unlucky

Max Verstappen has absorbed the disappointment of missing out in Q3 in Canada.

The Dutchman had looked quite competitive in Q1 but events conspired against him as a crash for Kevin Magnussen at the end of the second segment left the Red Bull driver unable to improve.

"I'm not down, it just happens in Formula 1," Verstappen told Sky Sports.

"We tried the medium tyre. The tyre didn't feel fantastic for us but then also we had traffic which didn't help.

"So then we went onto the soft tyre, but we got the red flag. So, yeah, very unlucky."

To make matters worse, a strange Q3 with errors from both Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas could have potentially made the second row a certainty for Max.

Instead, now, he's left facing a bit of a recovery back up into his rightful positions.

"I don't know… we are not really on pace with Ferrari and Mercedes so it will be anyway tricky to fight them tomorrow," he said of expectations.

"It's still not what we want to start is it so we'll find out tomorrow how it's going to go."

Giving Verstappen a boost is a grid penalty for Carlos Sainz and likely Magnussen having at least a gearbox change meaning he should start P9.
