Esteban Ocon was impressed by the performance of Renault during the two-day test in Abu Dhabi.

The Frenchman will replace Nico Hulkenberg at the team for 2020 and got his first taste of life back at the Enstone-based squad by driving both days at Yas Marina, completing over 200 laps.

For Ocon, the track time was much-needed after spending this year as reserve driver at Mercedes and he explained the importance of building a strong early relationship with his new colleagues.

“It’s been a busy two days in Abu Dhabi with a great outcome to write 2019 off with a nice ending," he commented.

"Today, especially, was very productive; it was probably worth two days of testing. We worked through a lot of things, which was very useful. I was getting used to everything again and growing more comfortable on each run.

"There were some important details cleared on my side and we also identified some areas we need to work on over the winter.

"I would like to thank Renault for this opportunity, I wish all the team a great winter after a busy season and I look forward to seeing them again soon.”

This isn't the first time Ocon has worked with Renault, having been a development driver in 2016 before making a mid-season switch to Manor that year.

The 22-year-old then is well-placed to assess the progress made in the three years and in particular comparing the French manufacturer's engine to Mercedes.

"It feels good. Obviously there's always a lot that you can improve, but the engine is also something new for me compared to a couple of years. Good power," Ocon stated.

"Then, of course, the balance, you need to always work on it, it's never perfect until you get the touch on it. I think we have a solid base that we can continue."
