Fernando Alonso continues to tease a possible Formula 1 comeback in 2020, claiming a third title would be his "greatest joy".

The Spaniard will not feature on the grid for the first time since 2002 this year after leaving his seat at McLaren, though will remain linked to the British team and is expected to test their new car this month.

At the same time, he was recently part of the winning Daytona 24 Hours entry for Wayne Taylor Racing and will compete at the Indianapolis 500 alongside WEC.

However on F1: "I always said it is 'see you later', not goodbye," Alonso told Italy's Corriere della Sera.

"Now I have new challenges to face with the right tools to win, while in Formula 1 there were no conditions to do the same. I do not have plans for 2020 and of course, winning a third title would be the greatest joy.

"If you feel strong, you do not need to look at your age," he added, with Alonso turning 38 this July. "You race until you realise that someone is stronger than you."

Fernando confirmed he will be keeping an eye on the sport this year, highlighting two drivers he is keen to follow.

“Robert Kubica, his story is unbelievable," he said of his good friend. "Up until a few months ago, Robert seemed to have lost all possibility.

"He will drive like he has nothing to lose because that is the case.”

“Then there is Leclerc at Ferrari. He’s young, intelligent and talented," Alonso said. “Learn to score points, to help the team, to know that the title is only decided between July and September.

“Do not be in a hurry and control his excitement and emotion.”

As for how he expects the 2019 season to pan out, the double world champion feels a changing of the guard is coming.

“I’m curious to see if Mercedes’ dominance will end," he stated. "I feel the moment is near.”
