Kevin Magnussen will start from the pit-lane following his crash in Canadian Grand Prix qualifying it is confirmed.

The Dane had qualified 10th as a result of those behind being unable to improve their time following his smash against the Wall of Champions in the final seconds of Q2.

However: "It's pretty big," Haas boss Guenther Steiner said of the damage. "We need to change the chassis - we will start from the pit lane, obviously.

"We need to change the gearbox. There’s no point trying to start somewhere at the back with the C5 tyre. So we start from the pit lane.

"The best way is to change the chassis, the quickest and safest way is to do that and then go back and start from the pit lane for once."

Also not starting from his qualifying position is Carlos Sainz, who picked up a three-place penalty for impeding Alex Albon in Q1.

The Spaniard was caught dawdling on the racing line by the Toro Rosso driver on the exit of Turn 2, with the stewards confirming he had not been warned in sufficient time by the McLaren pitwall.

Magnussen's absence will mean Sainz starts 11th rather than P12 as his penalty would have meant, but the big winner is Max Verstappen, who now starts P9 despite missing Q3.
