McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes the announced budget cap for 2021 can lead the way to more winners in Formula 1.
During the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, it was confirmed a figure of $175m had been agreed and that a framework was being put in place to regulate the new limit.
The final sign-off of the new regulations has since been pushed back to October to allow for more talks, but it has since been revealed the cap is not included in the list of topics to discuss.
Not only that, any effort by a team to reopen what has been agreed on that matter will result in Liberty offering no more concessions and the 2021 rules will be finalised as they currently stand.
Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul was quick to criticise the $175m number though calling it too high, but CEO Zak Brown sees it as a step in the right direction.
“It’s still a big sum,” he acknowledged to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. “The most important thing is to give the fans a good show. I do not think it takes so much money to do that.
“So why not let the 10 teams compete on a similar budget? That would make the sport less predictable, bring more surprises. In the end, the best will win either way.
“Take a look at IndyCar. The Penske's, Ganassi's and Andretti's still win the championship, but they do not win all the races. There are now and then winners from other teams.
“That’s good for the sport. A lower budget would allow for that.”

As for the other technical and sporting regulations that remain up for tweaking, the McLaren chief believes it won't be any more than that.
“Nothing in the document was a surprise. We’ve been talking about these rules for quite some time," he said.
“Of course there are things that I would like to see done differently. I think others feel the same, but I cannot imagine that much will be changed.
“There is still fine tuning but it makes no sense to fight for changes where there will be no changes. That is wasted energy.”
