Ferrari admit windtunnel and track data deviations have hurt 2019 car

Ferrari's 2019 car has been hampered by issues replicating windtunnel performance on track, Mattia Binotto claims.

The Scuderia had to re-evaluate their development strategy for the SF90 at the post-Spanish GP test, as a lack of downforce left them trailing Mercedes with Red Bull also now threatening to overtake.

However, while some improvement has been made, it hasn't been a smooth process with new parts also failing to deliver the anticipated results.

“What we can tell you is that, in specific conditions, there only have been, it’s wrong to say miscorrelations but let me say we didn’t have at the track what we were expecting from the wind tunnel,” Ferrari boss Binotto explained at Silverstone.

“In Paul Ricard, we had a new floor that didn’t work but other components that were left on the car were positive.

“In Austria, we did some measurements, tried to understand the issue and understand what went wrong with the floor.

“We are introducing important and significant items from the test itself and now at least we understood why it didn’t work and from now on we obviously need to progress and improve.”

Binotto has also warned against expecting a sudden improvement in performance, claiming the results will be more gradual.

“I think the development is a continuous development,” he said.

“After Barcelona, which was probably our weakest performance of the year so far, we introduced several changes and modifications in the car and also in Paul Ricard, in Austria and we got more modifications here [at Silverstone].

“It’s a continuous development. It’s not that we’ve left our car from Spain and there will be an upgrade on the car later. It’s already improved.”
