Lewis Hamilton credits the Mercedes mentality for their ability to remain on top in Formula 1 for so long.

The German manufacturer is on course for an unprecedented sixth consecutive double championship success in 2019, surpassing the five achieved by Ferrari during their period of domination with Michael Schumacher between 2000-2004.

During that time, the ability to adapt to rule changes has been important but Hamilton also pointed to the unwavering commitment of Mercedes to stay ahead of their rivals.

“What’s really great in this team is that I don’t think we’re ever complacent,” he was quoted by Motorsport Week.

“Even if we sometimes are it nips us in the bud and we pull back, but the majority of the time, we always arrive with the same mentality, we’ve had all this success yet everyone continues to work just as hard, and no-one is better than the other, and we all lift each other up.

“These eight wins in the first half of the season is obviously exceptional."

Despite the strong championship position, with Hamilton 62 points clear of Valtteri Bottas and Mercedes 150 points ahead of Ferrari, the Briton insists there are still areas to improve.

"There's always things you're able to learn from these races," he said.

"Even though the last one was pretty strong there are still areas that can be better – for example, qualifying is still not perfect yet and so I've got to work on that.

"In general the race pace has been really strong – something I'm really happy with and bit by bit, still understanding the car more,” he added.

"It's the same approach I've always had. I just take it one race at a time."
