Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has put his confidence in Mick Schumacher to eventually reach Formula 1.

The 20-year-old son of seven-time champion Michael joined the Italian team's academy at the start of this year, making his first appearance in red at the Bahrain test in April.

However, during his first season in Formula 2, he hasn't made the impact some were expecting with some good races, including a victory in Hungary, but only sits 11th in the Drivers' standings.

"Mick is making good progress, which we have expected in the past few years and now he is gaining valuable experience in Formula 2," Binotto told Germany's Bild.

"The moment will come where he is ready for Formula 1. We've invested a lot in him because we believe he can be a good Formula 1 driver."

Another year in F2 awaits in 2020 with his results likely crucial as to whether he makes the step into F1, likely at Alfa Romeo initially, in 2021.
