Jos Verstappen has warned Red Bull there's no guarantee his son Max will be staying beyond next season.

Earlier this year, speculation arose that the Dutchman would be on his way to Mercedes when it was revealed by team advisor Helmut Marko hee had certain performance clauses in his contract.

Victories in Austria and Germany would close any route out of the Red Bull for 2020, however, with his current deal set to expire after next year, Jos is already stirring the pot.

“The most important thing is that we get a car with which Max can compete for the title,” he told Ziggo Sport.

“Next year we will be at Red Bull anyway, but everything is still open for 2021."

Mercedes will remain the most likely alternative, with the former Benetton driver good friends with team boss Toto Wolff and Valtteri Bottas only signed to a one-year deal.

However, Max has also raised the prospect of working with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with the Monegasque firmly at Maranello for a few more years yet.

“It will really depend on whether we will get a car in 2020 we can fight for the championship," Jos continued.

“We are concentrating on next season and will look further afterwards.”
