Thoughts that Robert Kubica's Formula 1 return will only last one year are increasing with the Pole linked away from Williams for 2020.

There is an increasing expectation that Williams will choose reserve driver Nicholas Latifi to partner George Russell next season, with Kubica having struggled to consistently keep up with the Briton.

And speaking to the official F1 website, the 35-year-old offered the biggest hint yet that a departure is coming.

"I think I have, let’s say, a clear view on what is possible, what is not possible, and what I would like to do,” he said of his future.

“Sooner or later there will be some decisions and probably once the decision will be in place there will be a follow-up on what I might do next year or what I will not be doing next year.

“For sure, Formula 1 is something I would love to race, but if it will not be the case then I have good opportunities somewhere else.

"When the time will arrive, we will have to make the decision and see what is possible.”

The first of those "opportunities elsewhere" may well lie in DTM, with news on Monday that Audi motorsport boss Dieter Gass confirming talks with Kubica's management.

“[Kubica is an] Interesting driver for sure, for the DTM in general," he said via PlanetF1.

“It’s a bit early to comment too much into details of the driver situation for our factory drivers.

“But, if I look back, I think one of the differences [in Audi winning the manufacturers’ title this year] was that we had a very strong and balanced line-up.

“Every driver has been able to go on the podium or score big points, so it’s not easy to not continue without one of them at the end of the day.”

Gass stated he is yet to talk with Kubica directly, however, and the Pole still has sights on retaining his seat in F1.

“I never feel like I have done enough – for sure always you can do a better job and this is always my thinking,” Robert said on if he deserved to stay.

“I think I will say, I would be lying if I said ‘yes’ but this has always been my approach.”
