Mick Schumacher is confident he can step up to Formula 1 when the first opportunity arises.

The past 12 months have been a rollercoaster for the 20-year-old after winning the European F3 title, testing an F1 car for the first time in April but enduring a tricky first season in F2.

Even so, Schumacher has shown signs of progress and talk of his eventual promotion to F1 is never far away.

“Sure, I think about it. That’s my dream. It’s where I want to go, and that’s where I want to basically live my life. I feel ready," he told Autoweek.

“If you arrive in Formula 2, most of the people here would say that they are ready.

"Obviously a year in F2 is where you learn a lot about tyres and stuff that helps you for F1, but that doesn’t mean that you will automatically do a good job because there are a lot of different things in F1 that affect your position.”

As part of the Ferrari Academy, the stars appear aligned for Schumacher to step up with Alfa Romeo in 2021 and then it's upto Mick to prove himself worthy of following Michael into the Scuderia.

However, while those around him are prepared to be patient, he isn't.

“Maybe it makes more sense to stay another year in Formula 2 and do a good job,” Schumacher acknowledged.

“But that doesn’t mean that there will be any seats in F1 open, and you could be sitting there with nothing to drive. It is a bit like the sport choosing you rather you choosing the sport.

“If the chance comes, I will take it. Right now, I’m thinking about F2. We’re here and that is what I focus on, but I dream about F1,” he concluded.
