In a frantic dash for the line, Franco Morbidelli stole pole position from his team mate Alex Marquez at the very last moment. Although Morbidelli sat in pole during the closing minutes, Marquez swept in to claim it for himself. But on the chequered flag, Morbidelli stole it back with a time almost half a second quicker.

Conditions were sketchy, as the heavens opened once more upon the beginning of the session. Around 10 minutes in, it looked as if the session could be over no sooner than it had begun. But once the rain had stopped, the Moto2 boys came back out and a drying line began to appear on track.

Another rider out to impress in front of his home crowd is Sandro Cortese, who has had a hit and miss season so far. He rounds out the front row in 3rd.
