Mick Schumacher must be given time to "find his way" in Formula 2, says ex-F1 driver Marc Surer.

Following all the hype after his European F3 title and first F1 test with Ferrari, Schumacher's results in F2 have been mixed with three top eights but also three failures to score.

Last weekend in Spain he was largely anonymous with 12th and 15th place finishes leaving the German only 12th in the current standings but Surer isn't surprised.

"In your first season, it is mainly scanning, just give the poor boy some time to find his way," he told Motorsport-Total.com.

"He may make some mistakes, but those are generally minor things.

"Yet every small error is zoomed in on and is scrutinised while the same mistake of every other driver is accepted."

Another problem facing Schumacher is, with the weight of his father's legacy on his shoulders, stepping up to F2 and not repeating the remarkable instant success of Charles Leclerc and George Russell is seen as a disappointment.

But Surer does think the potential is certainly there as the 20-year-old gains experience.

“If you look at Mick and compare him with Michael, Mick is already much more talkative, he is really well trained and works well," he claimed.

"He has really got everything to be much more mature now."
