Hulkenberg expects 2020 decision soon as Williams & Formula E mooted

Nico Hulkenberg expects to have his 2020 plans sorted soon as interest both in and out of Formula 1 is suggested.

It was confirmed back at Spa that the German would be leaving Renault after this season with possible options at Haas and the two Red Bull teams closing last week in Singapore.

That has left Hulkenberg with just Alfa Romeo and Williams as his only choices and he admits the situation is ongoing.

“Well, ideally it would be that it’s all done now and we move on. It’s not done yet,” he was quoted by Crash.net giving an update on Thursday.

“I think it’s a matter of another few weeks. I don’t think it will take that much longer to be honest, so obviously the sooner the better.

“It’s good for everyone to have clarity, but as of now, it’s nothing yet.”

Of the two F1 teams left, Alfa is considered more likely due to Hulkenberg’s association with team boss Fred Vasseur while he would not meet Williams’ need of a driver with financial backing.

On a purely competitive basis though, his would-be teammate George Russell would welcome the chance to race with the well-respected veteran.

“My preference is to have the fastest driver possible next to me,” the Mercedes junior said.

“I feel ready to take control, to lead the team, if there were to be a rookie to come alongside me. Equally, I’d be just as happy to have an experienced guy, such as Hulkenberg, coming in, good reputation, experience.

“I’m sure I can learn some things from him, but it again gives me a good opportunity to show what I can do.”

A non-F1 option is in Formula E with four teams still with seats for Season 6, Hulkenberg though ruled it out for now.

“I haven’t even talked to them to be honest so I don’t know where this is coming from,” he said of the rumours.

“I heard that there were people coming, or wanting to talk, via friends and stuff, of people we know in common, but I haven’t pursued that yet.”
