Though Red Bull is “tailor-made” for Max Verstappen, that doesn’t always guarantee success, Pierre Gasly claims.
After Daniel Ricciardo surprised everyone with his move to Renault for 2019, the Milton Keynes-based outfit put the Dutchman front and centre of their operation as the clear lead driver.
That came to the detriment of Gasly, who originally replaced the Australian but only stayed just over half a season after struggling to get up to pace in the Red Bull team.
Still, having seen first-hand the support Verstappen receives, the Frenchman believes such an approach only works if everyone pulls together.
“Every driver would like to have a team that is tailor-made like Red Bull is to him,” he told Italy’s Autosprint.

“But don’t forget that Formula 1 is a team sport. You can only win if the whole team performs well.
“Everyone needs that help because your performance does not depend solely on yourself and all team members have to give everything for that.”
Upon returning to Red Bull’s second team, now named AlphaTauri, Gasly’s performances immediately improved, notably finishing second to Verstappen in Brazil.
And if he once again got to chance to race alongside Max, Pierre is sure the outcome would be different.
“It could have been much better,” he added. “If I went back to Red Bull, I would have learned a lot in the meantime.
“At least this season, I’m only interested in racing for AlphaTauri. All of my energy is into that now. I want to stay in Formula 1 at all costs.”
