Abu Dhabi GP: Leclerc leads disrupted Practice 2

Charles Leclerc went fastest as two red flags led to a heavily disrupted Practice 2 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Drivers were limited to just 25 minutes of running after Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg found the barriers in quick succession at Yas Marina Circuit.

Sainz caused the first stoppage after spinning off into the barriers at Turn 3 in a heavy crash.

The Spaniard was caught out by dirty air from a car in front and was powerless to save the car which went into an immediate high-speed spin.

After a lengthy stoppage to check the barriers, most drivers headed out on soft tyres to complete lower fuel runs.

However, Hulkenberg hitting the barrier exiting Turn 1 would trigger a second red flag period.

As a result, drivers were left with just the final 15 minutes to complete running as much as possible.

Max Verstappen epitomised the frustration by barging his way past the two Mercedes and Esteban Ocon on his way out of the pits.

Teams split strategies as some continued their soft tyre runs and others opted to focus on long runs.

Charles Leclerc immediately went quickest in the sole Ferrari, setting a 1m24.809s to finish less than half a tenth clear of Lando Norris in P2.

Verstappen jumped upto third late on, as Red Bull waited until the final minutes to complete their soft tyre run.

Valtteri Bottas split the two Bulls in fourth. Sergio Perez rued a mistake in the last sector on his fastest lap as he finished fifth.

George Russell moved upto sixth and Lewis Hamilton eighth with Zhou Guanyu between the two Mercedes’ in seventh.

Pierre Gasly took ninth as Oscar Piastri rounded out the top 10.

Fernando Alonso claimed 11th, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in P12 and Lance Stroll 13th in the second Aston Martin.

Esteban Ocon was 14th followed by Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon, Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant.

The early spinners Sainz and Hulkenberg brought up the field.
