Alfa Romeo deny reported Ericsson/Giovinazzi switch at the Belgian GP

Alfa Romeo has reportedly denied a report by Racer suggesting Marcus Ericsson will replace Antonio Giovinazzi at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Swede is at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend rather than racing in IndyCar, where he has driven for Arrow SPM throughout 2019 after being dropped by Sauber after last season.

However, the Swiss team told BBC’s Lawrence Barretto that Ericsson is present in Belgium in his capacity as third driver rather than taking over the seat held by the Italian.

The thought of Alfa Romeo considering a swap might not have been too surprising though, given Giovinazzi has only scored one point since making his full-time F1 debut.

This in comparison to 31 points for teammate and 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen.

If Ericsson has decided to skip the Portland IndyCar event himself that could also point to an uncertain future with Arrow SPM, who will merge with McLaren in 2020.

Only teammate James Hinchcliffe has a contract which is expected to be honoured by McLaren next season while Marcus maybe left looking elsewhere for a seat.
