Alonso admits interest in 2021 regulations could tempt F1 return

Fernando Alonso has opened the door to a Formula 1 return in 2021, admitting his interest in the new regulations.

The double world champion retired at the end of last year having lost motivation in the midfield with McLaren, unable to see an immediate path back to wins and podiums.

Since he left, however, talk of a comeback has rarely gone quiet and while he is currently focusing on other motorsports, including next year’s Dakar Rally, he himself also isn’t ruling it out.

“I need to figure out a couple of different challenges out of Formula 1, they’re not yet finished, like Indy 500 and other stuff,” Alonso, who is at the Italian GP in his ambassadorial role with McLaren, told Sky Sports.

“In 2021, with the new regulations, it’s a good mix that we can find there and maybe a different Formula 1 than we see now.

“The reasons why I left F1 are still present with domination from a clear team and races are a little bit too predictable, but in 2021 there’s a chance it could change and could be a good opportunity.

“Any other sport is a little more unpredictable than Formula 1, MotoGP is more unpredictable, Indy is more unpredictable.

“I think the new regulations are made for that, to level the field and to have more options.”

While the prospect of better racing is tempting to Alonso, there is one ever-increasing area which could keep him away.

“The only bad thing is the calendar, 22 races is non-stop. It’s quite demanding… I’m getting old,” he said with a smile.

Indeed, F1 could have as many as 25 races in the coming few years with several long-standing drivers, including Lewis Hamilton stating that could be critical to how much longer they stay on the grid.
