Alpine has revealed Fernando Alonso had an operation for a jaw fracture after a cycling crash on Thursday.
Initially, it was reported the two-time Formula 1 champion had been hit by a car while training near the Swiss city of Lugano, although Autosport claims Alonso only fell after braking to avoid a collision with a vehicle.
Later, the BBC’s Andrew Benson tweeted the Spaniard suffered a broken jaw as a result, and now Alpine has confirmed that Fernando did sustain a fracture in his upper jaw and had corrective surgery on Thursday.
Alonso’s medical team are “satisfied” with his progress since, but Fernando will remain under observation for the next 48 hours in the hospital.
On a positive note, Alpine believe Alonso will be allowed to gradually return to training after a few days of complete rest.
This means he will be able to fully prepare for his return to F1 this year, with pre-season testing and the opening race set to take place next month in Bahrain.
