Alpine era begins as bold A521 is unveiled

A new era is underway as Renault’s transformation to Alpine culminated in the launch of the A521 on Tuesday.

The rebranding comes as part of a restructuring at the French manufacturer, with the historic sportscar maker becoming the high-performance arm of the Renault Group.

Last year, the Enstone-based team enjoyed their best season with three podiums but ultimately slipped to fifth in the Constructors’ standings after a close fight with McLaren and Racing Point.

For 2021, Alpine welcomes a familiar face and an old friend in Fernando Alonso, who of course won his two championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

The Spaniard has been absent from the Formula 1 grid since the end of 2018 but has stayed close to the paddock with a test for McLaren in 2019 and several preparatory outings with Renault last year.

He joins Esteban Ocon, who will look to build on a solid return to F1 last year, capped off by finishing second at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

As for the A521, the blue livery was widely expected as the traditional racing colour of Alpine, while the French flag graphic already featured on the black paint scheme used for testing.
