Valtteri Bottas won’t concede defeat to Lewis Hamilton insisting “everything is possible” in the championship fight.
After Mercedes wrapped up the Constructors’ title in Japan, the Briton bids to secure his sixth Drivers’ crown this weekend in Mexico, needing to outscore his teammate by 14 points to do so.
Given the Brackley-based team’s poor recent record at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, however, achieving that kind of difference will be tough.
And speaking after his victory at Suzuka, he noted how something being highly unlikely is still different from being impossible.
“I don’t really give up on anything as long as there’s a theoretical chance so there’s no point in that,” he said.

“[Japan] was a good example on a track where it’s difficult to overtake. You start third, OK, two Ferraris ahead, it’s a difficult case to win but it’s possible.
“Yeah, everything’s possible although I’m realistic as well. I will need to be very lucky, that’s a fact, to win all the rest of the races but I don’t really think about that much at this point.”
Bottas has already acknowledged that Hamilton has been the better driver in 2019 and he insists the blame for the increasingly inevitable defeat in the championship only lies in one place.
“It is my bad, mostly, that I’ve been behind this much in the points compared to Lewis,” he stated.
“It’s my fault which I try to fix for the future but it is where we are now and just take it now race by race and see how it goes.”
