‘Comfortable’ Gasly targeting Ferrari for P6 in Constructors’ standings

Pierre Gasly remains “very comfortable” at AlphaTauri as he targets catching Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings in the final six races.

The Frenchman has been one of the standout performers in this revised 2020 season, with his surprise victory at Monza, of course, the main highlight.

With hopes of promotion back to Red Bull fading however, last week, rumours began that Gasly had contacted Renault about potentially replacing Esteban Ocon next year, much to the chagrin of his current employers.

But ahead of the Portuguese Grand Prix, Pierre was clear he remained satisfied at AlphaTauri.

“I was super happy with my sixth place at the Nürburgring, especially since Saturday had been tricky because the characteristics of the track did not suit us as well as the ones we had raced on recently,” he said.

“At the moment I feel I am very comfortable with the way we are all working as a team, and race by race we are increasing our understanding of what it takes to get the most out of the car.

“I am satisfied with how things are going and happy that the results are there. The team is doing all it can and that makes me happy. Now we take that momentum forward to the next race.”

The most impressive part of Gasly’s season has been his consistency, with seven top-10s in a car that hasn’t quite had the pace of the other upper midfield teams.

“I think that was a personal target coming into this season,” he said.

“We finished last year very strong with Toro Rosso and this was my personal target, to find some more consistency for my third full season in Formula 1. Things so far have been pretty good.

“There are still areas we can improve. Recently we have been able to fight for the top-10 on a more consistent basis and that is what we need to keep pushing for.”

His results have driven AlphaTauri to within 13 points of Ferrari, who sit P6 in the Constructors’ Championship.

And Gasly does believe overhauling the Scuderia is a legitimate goal.

“At the moment, it is very tight, we are seventh in the championship,” he said.

“There will be opportunities at the end of the year and for us as a team, it will be important to squeeze a few more points and try to get sixth place for AlphaTauri in the teams’ championship.”
