Fernando Alonso wants to return to Formula 1 but doesn’t have a choice to do so, David Coulthard claims.
Despite leaving his seat McLaren at the end of 2018, the double world champion has remained in the limelight and recently voiced his interest in making a comeback when the new regulations come into effect in 2021.
However, the problem facing Alonso, as the Scot explained, is while he might be enthusiastic to return, there might not be any competitive options available.
“I know he wants to come back, but I don’t think he has a choice,” Coulthard told Spain’s AS.
“I don’t think Mercedes needs him or wants him. I don’t think Ferrari needs him or wants him. I don’t think Red Bull needs him or wants him. Where’s he going to go? Back to McLaren?”
At this point, there really doesn’t seem to be a realistic destination for Alonso in F1 with even Renault, the team he won his two titles with, putting an emphasis on their academy drivers.

Add to that, his poor relationship with Honda has also come back to bite him, after they blocked a deal with Andretti Autosport to compete in this year’s Indianapolis 500.
As a result, Coulthard thinks the time is coming when the 38-year-old may have to accept his competitive days of racing in major series is over.
“For me, Alonso is one of the most talented drivers ever in Formula 1, really talented like Hamilton, [Michael] Schumacher or [Ayrton] Senna,” he claimed.
“Everything he’s driven has been in a hurry, but everyone has their moment and maybe it has come for him.”
