At 11.04 this morning, Austrian BMW driver Philipp Eng wrote history at Hockenheim, posting the fastest ever lap time in a tin-top car at the German circuit.
In qualifying for today’s second DTM race of the weekend, the Austrian was the only one with a sub-1m29s time as he claimed pole position in 1m28.972s.
Yesterday’s race winner Marco Wittmann completed a clean-sweep of the front row for BMW with a time of 1m29.388s. Audi locks out the second row with Abt-Audi teammates Robin Frijns and Nico Müller in third and fourth places respectively.
On Friday and Saturday, Eng was sidelined for most of the practice sessions due to electronics issues on his BMW M4 DTM, but today’s qualifying result spectacularly made up for the earlier mishaps.
“Many thanks to the guys who did a great job in sorting out the problem. I am really glad it worked out in qualifying,” Eng commented after taking the second pole position of his DTM career.
In 14th, Daniel Juncadella is the best-placed R-Motorsport Aston Martin driver while René Rast, who retired from second place with gearbox failure in yesterday’s race, only ended up 16thafter being side-lined with an issue during the session.
