Former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali is to replace Chase Carey as Formula 1 CEO from 2021, it has been reported.
The Italian replaced Jean Todt at the helm of the Scuderia in 2008 – the last year Ferrari won a championship – and stayed on until early 2014.
Since then Domenicali has held several roles, notably as CEO of Lamborghini as well as heading the FIA’s single-seater commission, during which time GP2 and GP3 were rebranded as F2 and F3.
Now he’ll take over the day-to-day running of F1 from Carey, who ended Bernie Ecclestone long reign as CEO when Liberty Media completed their takeover in 2017.
The American had initially planned to step down last year but stayed on until the completion of the new Concorde Agreement, which all teams signed last month.
When speculation over Carey’s successor began last year, current Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was understood to be a leading candidate.
However, it is claimed Ferrari blocked the Austrian taking the CEO position, therefore it is quite interesting that one of their own former team principals is now set to assume the role.
And when Domenicali does so, he’ll be working with another ex-Ferrari colleague in F1 motorsport director Ross Brawn, while Todt will enter his final year as FIA president.
