F1 less appealing when Ferrari is not successful – Pirelli CEO

Formula 1 needs a competitive and successful Ferrari to be more appealing to fans, Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera claims.

In 2019, the Scuderia has been unable to maintain their form of the past two years when they challenged Mercedes for wins if not ultimately the championship.

However, the last race in Montreal saw Ferrari back in contention at least for one weekend, and the increased excitement that came with a duel between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel was clear to see.

“Ferrari victories in Formula 1 are good for everyone,” Provera told Italian broadcaster Rai.

“A Formula 1 without a competitive Ferrari loses its appeal. I know that I should be neutral, but a victorious Ferrari generates a completely different dynamic in F1.

“And then I am also Italian, so a Ferrari victory is simply close to my heart.”

Work to bring the Italian team back into regular contention with Mercedes continues at Maranello, and team boss Mattia Binotto revealed what improvements are coming this weekend at Paul Ricard.

“Following Canada, we definitely want to get back on track and go racing with our rivals once again,” he stated in his race preview.

“In France, we will have a few small evolutions, elements that represent for us a useful step in defining the direction we will take in developing the car.

“What we will be bringing won’t be the solution to our problems, but the technical feedback we get from these evolutions will be important for the next steps we take.”
