F1 Testing: Raikkonen goes fastest as Vettel hits the track on Day 2

Kimi Raikkonen topped the times before coming to a halt in the final hour of Day 2 at pre-season testing in Spain.

The 2007 world champion popped on a set of Pirelli’s C5 tyres and posted a 1m17.0912, beating Sergio Perez’s morning benchmark by a quarter of a second.

That high was followed by a small low, however, as Raikkonen would then cause the first red flag of testing with just over 15 minutes to go, coming to a halt approaching Turn 9 in the Alfa Romeo.

Daniel Ricciardo remained third with his best time of the morning, but it was a tricky day for Renault who were the only team not to reach 100 laps and had Esteban Ocon down in 12th.

Fourth-placed Alex Albon improved by two-tenths in the afternoon to put a little more daylight between himself and Pierre Gasly in fifth in the AlphaTauri.

As Sebastian Vettel made his first appearance of pre-season testing at Ferrari, having skipped Day 1 through illness, finishing sixth-fastest using the C4 tyres with 72 laps to his name.

That put the German less than two-tenths ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc in eighth, but the Monegasque would use one step harder tyres to post his time.

George Russell followed in seventh, as Williams continued their strong start to testing with another 116 laps in the FW43.

While, after a 1-2 on Wednesday, Mercedes focused on long-run pace on Day 2 with Lewis Hamilton finishing ninth and Valtteri Bottas bottom of the timesheet in 13th.

The Brackley-based team was on course to reach 200 laps across the two drivers, but electronic issues forced an early end to their day just 17 laps short.

Lando Norris was 10th for McLaren, as Romain Grosjean completed the most laps for a single driver with 158 but brought his day to a close after spinning gently into the barrier at Turn 4.

Full times and lap counts from Day 2 in Barcelona can be seen below:
