There is mixed news on Formula 2 driver Juan Manuel Correa, who was involved in the fatal crash of Anthoine Hubert in Spa.

Since the accident, the American has been in a medically induced coma having been transferred from Liege to a specialist hospital in London.

However, in the latest update on Friday, his family confirmed he has now been taken out of that coma and is gradually regaining consciousness, with his condition upgraded to ‘serious’ from ‘critical’.

Focus is now shifting to the other injuries he sustained in the accident, including to his lungs, spine and more seriously his legs.

“Doctors are in a race against time to perform a pending major surgery in order to minimise the risk of irreversible injuries to his right lower extremity but can’t proceed until lungs are ready to withstand a lengthy operation,” the statement explained.

“Juan Manuel is conscious, but not fully yet awake. Doctors report that this will take a few days due to being in an induced coma for more than two weeks.

“They have also stated that Juan Manuel is fragile and still vulnerable medically speaking and that he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.”

Everyone at InsideRacing wishes Correa and his family the best going forward.
