Fernando Alonso will get his first taste of the 2019 McLaren at the post-race test in Bahrain.

The double Formula 1 champion may have called time on his career at the end of last season, but he maintains an active position within the British team and became an ambassador last month.

In the role, he will work behind the scenes to help with development of the MCL34 and next year’s MCL35, including driving duties which start with both days next week as part of Pirelli’s test program.

Alonso will run all day on Tuesday before sharing the car with Carlos Sainz on Wednesday, taking the wheel in the afternoon.

The 37-year-old has always maintained he would keep the door open to return to F1 providing he had a car capable of fighting for wins and the championship.

For now, he is focused on completing the Triple Crown and will enter the Indianapolis 500 for the second time in May with a McLaren car.

He has also recently hinted at a Bathurst 1000 attempt in the Australian Supercars series and tested a Toyota Dakar Rally car on Monday.
