Ferrari: Hungary to give indication on downforce improvements

The Hungarian Grand Prix will tell Ferrari if significant progress has been made on improving the chassis performance of the SF90, Mattia Binotto claims

Since the start of the season, the Italian team has had the quickest car in a straight line but has struggled with understeer and a general lack of downforce through the corners.

Efforts to address the weakness have taken place throughout the European season and, in the final race before the summer break, the technical Hungaroring will put those improvements to the test.

“It will be important to see if this race provides further confirmation that our car has improved on various types of track,” Binotto said looking ahead to this weekend.

“We will be able to count on the various elements we introduced recently, as well as some aerodynamic updates.”

Ferrari has been very strong in Budapest in recent years with only a wet qualifying in 2018 giving Mercedes track position and the eventual win.

There was also hope at Hockenheim, where the team led all three practice sessions before reliability problems struck both cars, and solving those issues is also now a main priority.

“Budapest is a track where cooling is usually an important factor and where cars run in maximum downforce configuration,” the team boss noted.

“The tyres come under a lot of stress because of the type of corners and that even applies over a single lap in qualifying.

“Of course, we are focusing on resolving our recent reliability problems to ensure they do not occur again.”
