FIA approves record 22-race F1 calendar for 2020

Formula 1’s record 22-race calendar in 2020 is now official having been ratified by the FIA.

The draft of the longest season in the sport’s history has been known for some time and finally got the green light at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on Friday.

Once again, Australia will be the curtain-raiser on March 15th while F1’s two new races feature in the first five rounds.

Vietnam’s inaugural Grand Prix on the streets of Hanoi will be the third race on April 5th with the returning Dutch GP at Zandvoort four weeks later on May 3rd.

That means Spain loses its place as the first event of the European season, however, it can be thankful just to be continuing at all after agreeing to a one-year extension in Barcelona.

Azerbaijan retakes its original date in June for the mad dash around Baku pushing back the next four races by an additional week compared to 2019.

This is possible due to the absence of Germany on the calendar as Hockenheim, unfortunately, finds itself unable to foot the bill for a third straight year.

Hungary again leads into the summer break, with the final run to Abu Dhabi identical to this year but for Austin and Mexico which switch places with the US Grand Prix once again coming first.

And it all comes to a close on November 29 in Abu Dhabi under the lights at Yas Marina.

To accommodate the extra race, pre-season testing has been cut to two three-day events in Barcelona on February 19-21 and 26-28 while all in-season tests have been dropped.
