FIA president Jean Todt has confirmed the governing body will investigate the terrifying crash for Sophia Floersch during Sunday’s Macau Grand Prix.

The 17-year-old was seen torpedoing through a catch fence into a photographers area after reportedly going airborne over a kerb on the approach to Lisboa Bend and gaining further height over the back of Sho Tsuboi’s car.

Medical reports later confirmed a fractured spine for the German as well as injuries to three track personnel, two photographers and a marshal, all of which were kept in hospital overnight. Tsuboi also required treatment but was discharged on Sunday.

“Just wanted to let everybody know that I am fine but will be going into surgery tomorrow morning,” Floersch tweeted after the crash. “Thanks to the FIA, HWA and Mercedes who are taking great care of me.

“Thanks to everybody for the supporting messages. Update soon.”

It was in response to that tweet, that Todt announced the investigation.

“After the serious incident today in Macau, the FIA is mobilized to help those involved and analyze what happened. We will monitor the situation and make the necessary conclusions.

“All my thoughts are with you Sophia Floersch & the others injured. I wish you all a safe recovery.”

After a lengthy red flag period following the crash, Formula 3’s signature race was won by Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum for the second straight year, becoming only the third driver ever to win back-to-back in Macau.
