Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has expressed confidence in signing Lewis Hamilton to a new Formula 1 contract.

The 2021 driver market has gone into overdrive in the past day or so as news broke that Sebastian Vettel would not be continuing at Ferrari beyond this season.

Of course, Hamilton has been linked to replacing the German at the Italian team with his own deal expiring, but any chance of another earth-shattering move appears unlikely.

"With Lewis, we are in a good place," Wolff told GPFans on the progress in talks.

Earlier this year both Hamilton and the Austrian sat down with Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle in a wide-ranging interview.

And commenting yesterday after the Vettel news, he seemed sure the six-time world champion was going nowhere.

"I think he made it quite clear when we did the interview with him on Sky F1 that Mercedes is his future, both inside of the cockpit and outside of it, into the future, the distant future," said Brundle.

"I think Lewis has publicly said he doesn't want to break his ties with Mercedes Benz. Every race he's ever won in Formula 1, whether it be in a McLaren or a Mercedes, had a Mercedes engine, and there's something he can build on in the future.

"He point-blank says he doesn't want to take the Ferrari route."
