Daniel Ricciardo says he is "grateful" for his time at Renault after it was confirmed he's joining McLaren next season.

In the fallout of Sebastian Vettel announcing his exit at Ferrari after 2020, the Australian switched from a candidate to replace his former teammate to taking the seat of Carlos Sainz, the man who will instead move to Maranello.

Of course, that means Ricciardo will depart from the French manufacturer just two years after his surprise move from Red Bull, and while the first season together was disappointing, he is keen to end it on a high.

"I am so grateful for my time with Renault and the way I was accepted into the team," he wrote on Twitter.

"But we aren’t done and I can’t wait to get back on the grid this year. My next chapter isn’t here yet, so let’s finish this one strong. Merci"

In a short statement, Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul didn't mention Ricciardo by name, instead reasserting the team's commitment going forward.

“In our sport, and particularly within the current extraordinary situation, reciprocated confidence, unity and commitment are, more than ever, critical values for a works team.

"I am confident that the 2020 season will allow us to accomplish even more together. Our ambitions and the strategy of Renault DP World F1 Team remain unchanged.”
