Racing Point has paid tribute to "blisteringly quick" Sergio Perez after it was confirmed he will leave the team at the end of 2020.

Late on Wednesday, the Mexican revealed his departure in a statement on social media, with Sebastian Vettel announced as his replacement early on Thursday.

The move was expected following weeks of speculation, but the decision still remains a little surprising given Perez had only signed a three-year deal with Racing Point last year until the end of 2022.

Still, it is another example of the ruthless nature of Formula 1 and CEO Otmar Szafnauer made sure to realise the contribution Sergio has made at the team.

“Checo has been part of the Silverstone family for seven years and in that time has become one of the most complete drivers on the grid,” he said.‍

“Blisteringly quick on Saturday and Sunday, he’s established his reputation as a tenacious racer and together we have enjoyed some fantastic moments.

“If there was ever a sniff of a podium, Checo was ready to pounce, and those five podiums represent some of the finest days in the history of this team.

“Outside of the car, Checo is a true character and a good friend, and it’s been a pleasure working with him for such a long time.

“Although we will say goodbye at the end of the year, there are still nine races to go and plenty of opportunities for Checo to make some more special memories with this team.”

In his statement, Perez admitted he was a little "hurt" by the decision, given it was he who helped save the team back in 2018, and also confirmed he has "no Plan B" for what he'll do in 2021.
