Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll admits a potential offer to sign Lewis Hamilton for 2022 would be "tempting".

At the start of this month, the current Mercedes driver signed a new one-year extension to his contract, leaving open the possibility he could depart after this season.

Generally, it is thought the only path for Hamilton after Mercedes is retirement, but Stroll doesn't rule out a bid to lure him to Aston.

“It’s definitely tempting. Lewis in any car is great and I’m sure everyone would say yes because he is a seven-time World Champion," he told the PA news agency.

“But right now, I am extremely focused on getting started this year.”

Interestingly, the idea of Hamilton to Aston Martin isn't quite as far-fetched as it seems.

The team is perhaps the only one, with the exception of Ferrari, who could afford to sign the 36-year-old.

Aston certainly has the potential to be fighting for wins and championships in the coming years, something that would only increase with Lewis on board.

And of course the team has close ties to Mercedes, so Hamilton would be remaining with the manufacturer that has helped him throughout his racing career.

Naturally, there would be the matter of who he would replace at the Silverstone-based team.

Sebastian Vettel has only just joined from Ferrari on a two-year deal at least, while there's a perception Lance Stroll has a seat for life with his father.

But still, with many of Hamilton's critics pointing to the dominance of Mercedes as the only reason for his remarkable success, a move to Aston could provide an interesting chance to prove them wrong once and for all.
