Max Verstappen admits Red Bull have been more competitive than he expected after inheriting second on the grid in Austria.

The Dutchman was able to split the two Mercedes before benefitting from Lewis Hamilton's penalty to line up alongside Charles Leclerc on the front row.

"Just, in general, our whole weekend performance has been a lot better," he commented.

"Before we came here I was not looking forward to qualifying but with new updates, we gained a bit of performance.

"I was really happy with the car throughout, in the corners we were really competitive. I know we’re lacking pace vs Mercedes and Ferrari, knowing it’s not a great track for us it’s a great result in qualifying."

Last year Verstappen capitalised on Mercedes' reliability woes to win in front of thousands of Dutch fans at the Red Bull Ring, and he will look to feed off that support again on Sunday.

“It’s great, it brings a big smile on my face and hopefully I can give them a great result tomorrow,” he concluded.
