Fernando Alonso can return to Formula 1 with a rival team while remaining an ambassador for McLaren, CEO Zak Brown claims.

Speculation over the Spaniard has been rising in recent weeks with a report last week, that was soon denied, suggesting he was parting ways with the British team to continue his motorsport adventures.

Then this week, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko revealed representatives had told the team he was "available" for a seat in 2020, something that hasn't been denied.

“Fernando remains an ambassador for McLaren,” Brown reaffirmed at the British Grand Prix earlier this week.

“We have got a great relationship with him and speak with him about some racing programmes in the future that are not Formula 1 related.

“But we’re happy for him, if he wants to get back into Formula 1 and because we don’t have a seat available, to go race for another team.

“We’d very much support him in that if that’s what he wants to do," he concluded.

McLaren has already shown this openness through Alonso's seat at Toyota in the WEC and the double world champion is expected to drive again with the Japanese brand at the Dakar Rally.

As for whether that would extend to Fernando competing in a non-McLaren entry at Indianapolis, following the failure this year, we would have to see.
