Gasly eyes AlphaTauri boost at potentially last French GP

Pierre Gasly is keen to fully enjoy what could be his last French Grand Prix this weekend.

The race at Paul Ricard is expected to be dropped after 2022, with France potentially being part of a rotating European schedule with some races taking place every two or three years.

As a result, the Rouen-born AlphaTauri driver, who has a best result of seventh in his home GP, is eager to deliver in front of his fans.

“It’s a special weekend as it’s my home race, particularly this year as there is some uncertainty over the future of the French Grand Prix,” Gasly said.

“We are not sure if it stays on the calendar or not for next year, so I want to enjoy the moment and share it with all my fans, supporters and French F1 racing enthusiasts.

“In fact, we’ve organised a special Gasly grandstand at the chicane on the back straight for my fans.

“It’s nice to be able to do something a bit more personal and to connect with them a bit more than usual.

“It’s going to be a good atmosphere and I hope we can perform well enough to deliver a good result in front of the French crowd.”

AlphaTauri’s recent results though have been lacklustre with Gasly’s last points coming in Azerbaijan.

But a “reasonably large” upgrade is coming for Paul Ricard, offering the 2020 Italian GP winner some hope for an improvement.

“They should deliver a real step up in performance,” Gasly claimed. “So I’m keen to try them out at Ricard, in the hope that they can put us back in the fight for points.

“[We are] probably the slowest car on track at the moment and [it is] just a big shame to see we’re fighting for the last positions, so I think we need a big reset and clearly need these new upgrades on the car as fast as possible.”
