Gasly questions Ocon’s racing style after late battle in Mexico

Pierre Gasly was not too pleased with fellow Frenchman Esteban Ocon after the pair came to blows during the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Toro Rosso driver made his way through from the back of the grid on Sunday after engine penalties and came across the ‘pink panther’ for the final points position in the closing laps at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

After rebuffing an attack into Turn 1, Gasly went around the outside of the Force India into the chicane at Turns 4 & 5 only to be shoved wide almost onto the grass, something that didn’t particularly surprise the 22-year-old.

“With Ocon, it’s always the same thing. I’ve known him for a long time, there are a lot of chances that things happen,” Gasly said after the race.

“I think he wasn’t very happy that I had started last and managed to overtake him, so he pushed me wide and I had to go off track.

“I could have forced my way in Turn 5 and we would have had contact, but it wasn’t worth it, as I could have another go after that.

“For me it wasn’t fair, because you leave the space for one car, but if they say you can race aggressively, I don’t mind.”

The stewards investigated by cleared Ocon suggested a lock-up by Gasly was as much responsible for his going wide than any action by Esteban, Pierre though drew comparisons between that at a similar action he did on Sergio Perez at the Vale chicane at Silverstone for which he was penalised.

“It seems to be quite a grey area, as normally you should leave space for one car and clearly there wasn’t space for one car there,” he said.

“I’ll try to speak to Charlie [Whiting] about it, just to know, because if this is allowed then I know what I can do.

“I need to look at the footage again, but from the cockpit it looked too aggressive for me, I had to go off track.

“In the end, I don’t care because I finished ahead of him [Ocon] and I scored one point, and he didn’t score points.”
