Gasly: Recent strong results not simply due to Toro Rosso return

Pierre Gasly doesn’t believe there is a link between his return to Toro Rosso and recent stronger results.

Having struggled to make an impact at Red Bull, leading to his demotion during the summer break, the Frenchman has scored similar results at the junior team with three top 10’s since Spa.

His most recent was an impressive eighth place in Japan, which could have easily been better but for the late charges of Charles Leclerc and Daniel Ricciardo, and was particularly good given his limited track time.

“I think so for sure, and also with the way of the weekend,” he said on if the result was positive.

“Without driving in FP1, FP2 was the only session here in Suzuka and it’s a difficult track to get all your marks and get the car where you want.

“So that wasn’t the best preparation of the weekend, but in the end we managed to be ninth in FP2, ninth in qualifying and eighth in the race.

“It was definitely the most complete weekend so far with Toro Rosso, and every weekend seems to be going better and better,” Gasly added.

“Also the way we work with the engineers I’m really happy with, how we managed to evolve during the weekend, so no, a lot of positives of the weekend carrying forward in the next couple of races.”

Gasly though is adamant that his improvement is only due to getting to grips with the Toro Rosso car, as opposed to the Faenza-based team understanding his requirements better than Red Bull did.

“I think we need to have the stars aligned to really get the best out of the package you have,” he reflected.

“As I said, there are a couple of things that I think I could’ve done, and we could’ve done better, with Red Bull.

“But yeah, I don’t really want to come back on this topic, I think now I just want to focus on Toro Rosso and really extract the maximum out of this package, which is what we did this weekend, but now we need to do the same in the next couple of weekends.”
