Lewis Hamilton has called out Fernando Alonso for what he considers the one crucial mistake the Spaniard made during his Formula 1 career.
With just two races to go before he retires after 17 years on the grid, Alonso has been enjoying each weekend as they come despite two early DNF’s in Austin and Mexico.
Praise and admiration for the double world champion has also started, however, the debate on his legacy has been ongoing for a while given his perception as an underachiever despite his obvious immense talent.
“Sure, he could have won more championships but it’s not like he didn’t have the chance,” Hamilton was quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. “It just depends on making the right decisions outside the cockpit.
“If you think like he did that you control the driver market, you can’t be surprised when you end up without something in your hands. Because Seb [Vettel] and I were also on the market.”

For some, Hamilton could be considered the cause for Alonso’s career downfall after he forced out the now 37-year-old after his rookie season at McLaren in 2007 when their working relationship crumbled.
Nowadays, the pair are on much better terms, with Fernando naming Lewis as one of the top five greatest drivers two weeks ago and that respect is mutual.
“I have a lot of respect for Fernando. He is a phenomenal driver, and I believe his reputation has not suffered in recent years [despite McLaren’s poor performance],” he said.
“I think people know what he brought inside and outside of F1.”
